Concerning Adhesives and Glue
A magnet is held in place using some sort of glue or adhesive in so many applications. With so many queries concerning glue, we thought we’d share some of what we’ve learned from attaching neodymium magnets over the years.
Make certain that the surfaces are clean.
While we are not adhesive gurus like 3M or Loctite, we have bonded our fair share of magnets in different assemblies, projects, products, and test rigs. Read the instructions for the individual glue you’re using for further information. We’ve discovered that they all begin with something like, “Clean the surface before applying the glue.”
That cannot be overstated. Surfaces must be spotless. It’s remarkable how a few greasy fingerprints may diminish a glue bond’s strength and repeatability. Isopropyl alcohol can be applied with a swab or cloth. Some adhesive primers are available, generally consisting of alcohol or acetone. They are another approach to ensure that the surface is clean.Many adhesives provide guidelines for preparing the surface of steel or aluminum. While there are no explicit requirements for nickel-plated neodymium magnets, we have followed their metal recommendations. Look at the top of page 4 of this standard for 3M’s DP-100 Epoxy Adhesive. It states for bonding to steel:
Dust should be removed with an oil-free solvent such as acetone or isopropyl alcohol.
Using clean fine grit abrasives, sandblast or abrade the surface.
All epoxies and many other adhesives need the roughening of a particularly smooth surface. Before gluing, softly sand a small portion of the nickel plated surface using a fine grit sandpaper. Make careful to remove the dust off the magnet after sanding! For some sizes, a sharp nail may be used to scrape the surface, which works almost as well.
