Neodymium Iron Boron Magnets (“”Neo””, NdFeB or Neodymium) are constructed of an alloy that includes the elements Neodymium, Iron, and Boron (NdFeB). NdFeB magnets are the strongest commercially available magnets and come in a variety of forms, sizes, and grades.

What is the function of a Neodymium magnet?
The Neodymium magnets are anisotropic sintered magnets, which means that the alloy is jet milled to a thin powder and then sintered.

To give the alloy a preferred direction of magnetisation, it is jet milled to a fine powder and then compressed in the presence of a magnetic field. The NdFeB magnets are then sintered to weld the powder together before being final machined and magnetized to produce the finished high strength Neodymium magnet.

Because neodymium-iron-boron magnets contain roughly 75% iron, they are prone to corrosion. Nickel plating (Ni-Cu-Ni; effectively a triple coating) is the most frequent protective coating applied to Neo magnets. The following coatings are now available:

As part of our custom Precision NdFeB line, we can make smaller Neodymium magnets with tolerances of +/-0.005mm (we would indicate the tolerance that could be reached for each design, but please note that manufacturing runs would be subject to a minimum order quantity of 100k).

NdFeB (NIB) magnets in disc and ring form are typically axially magnetised (the magnet poles are the round ends). Diametrically magnetised discs and rings can be made on request (in diametrically magnetised magnets, magnetism flows from the 12 o’clock position to the 6 o’clock position). Similarly, rectangular blocks can be specially made to be magnetized in any of the three axes (the magnets cannot be re-magnetised in another axis owing to the manufacturing procedure – sintered NdFeB is anisotropic). Arcs, trapezoids, and other forms are also possible. Bespoke Magnetisation Directions within the magnet form may also be available (subject to confirmation), for example, for Halbach Array assembly.
